Bonmarche is a popular women’s retail chain based in Wakefield. They specialise in clothes tailored to the over 50s. They take particular pride in their range of stunning plus size items. The company has ranges in basics, formal, lingerie and nightwear.
Officially founded in 1982. However Parkash Singh Chima the founder, began his little business in 1950 after he moved to Britain. Selling clothes that were very much in demand after the shortages of World War II.
This family business continued to remain steady and in 1982 Chima was able to acquire two retail firms that had many market stalls all over England. His sons now joined in business.
The first Bonmarche store, as we know it today, opened its doors in 1985. In no time at all the small chain grew to some 300 locations and an annual turnover of over £200 million. Once Chima grew too old he retired and naturally left his business to his sons. They held the company until 2002 when they sold to the Peacock Group.
Another change of hands was seen in 2012 when Sun European LLP purchased the company. This business is an American investment firm that also owns several other UK company such Sharps Kitchen and Bathrooms and SCS Sofas.
For the past ten years Bonmarche has been an avid fan and involved supporter of the Macmillan Cancer Support. Fund raising is as much a part of their core values as supplying great value quality clothing is.
With a real knack for designing clothes that suit all body shapes and flatter all sizes. Not to mention a passion for excellent value it is no surprise that Bonmarche has won awards for their products. Most recently they were awarded “Best for Flattering Fit” at the 50+ fashion awards and “Britain’s Best Woman’s Clothing Retailer” with the Verdict Research Awards.
