About First TransPennine Express

First TransPennine Express is a British train operating company owned by FirstGroup and Keolis. Operating specifically in Northern England and stretching to the central belt of Scotland, calling at 60 different train stations.

Beginning as The TransPennine Express, the brand has seen several changes of hands, initially launching in late 1998 by Northern Spirit and then successfully being maintained by its successor, Arriva Trains Northern. During a structural shake up by the Strategic Rail Authority in 2000, The TransPennine Express was made into a franchise, offering a solution for long-distance regional services.

In July 2003, the Strategic Rail Authority awarded the TransPennine franchise to the First Group and Keolis. On the 1st February 2004, operations were transferred from Arriva Trains Northern and First North Western to what would become the brand we now know and love; First TransPennine Express.

The central hub is located in Manchester and covers three main routes. The service provides rail links for major cities such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Sheffield, Hull, Leeds, York, Scarborough and Newcastle.

Train fares

Their fleet of trains include 51, Class 185 Desiro trains, built 1998-2005. Another 9, Class 170 Turbostar trains, built 2005-2006 and a further 10, Class 350 Desiro trains, their latest additions built in 2013-2014. The latter are capable of achieving 110 mph and began running a fully electric service between Manchester to Scotland in May 2014.

First TransPennine Express is one of the few UK train operating companies that goes that extra mile, providing service 24 hours a day, even including New Year’s Eve. To put that into context, First TransPennine Express dedicated team of employees work tirelessly to have a train running between York, Leeds and Manchester Airport at least every three hours every night of the week.

How to save up to 50% on your ticket

You don't need a degree in rocket science or mathematics to save yourself up to 50% on your train fare. Just use your common sense and the tools available and you can nearly save yourself half the cost. By following 3 simple tips, you can stay one step ahead of the usual prices that some travellers fall into paying.

First of all, plan ahead. Dust off your diary and plan your journeys in advance. Second, be flexible. Being able to travel at certain times of the day is essential to helping knock off a few more pounds from your booking. Finally, buy off-peak. By chopping and changing the times you book and travel, you'll soon be booking a much cheaper train ticket.
