H Samuel has established itself as the UK’s favourite high street jeweller. With just under 400 stores across the country, customers have been entering their doors to choose from a vast range of diamond, gold and silver jewellery. With other products like top branded watches and extensive range of collectibles, the business has flourished since its early beginnings.
The company’s history stems from 1862, when Harriet Samuel took over her father-in-law’s clock-making business in Liverpool. Harriet moved the business to Manchester’s Market Street and ran the mail order side. Her son developed the retail area.
In 1890, H Samuel’s first retail store opened its doors to the public in Preston. Several more branches began to appear in Rochdale and throughout Lancashire. As a result of their expansion, in 1912, the business was moved to larger headquarters located in Birmingham.
With World War 2 over, Harriet Samuel’s grandsons Gilbert and Robert took over the company, acting as Chairman and Vice Chairman. Gilbert was awarded a CBE for his political and public services; becoming a Queen’s Sheriff for the City of London and was elected Master of the Clockmakers Company. By this point, H Samuel’s store numbers has greatly increased to over 200.
The chain is now part of the Signet Group, the world’s largest specialist jeweller. The Signet Group also owns the Ernest Jones and Leslie Davis high-street jewellery stores in the UK.
