Founded in 1837, P&O Cruises started off as Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company by Brodie McGhi Willcox and Arthur Anderson. The pair had great experience in the travelling field as Willcox was a London Ship Broker and Anderson was a Sailor for the Shetland Isles.
Originally the company shipped between England and the Iberian Peninsula delivering mail. Don Juan was the first mailing ship, who started its first voyage on the 1st September 1837 from London.
In 1840 the company took on another contract to ship mail to Egypt, however as the Don Juan had an accident on route back from its previous voyage, Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company didn’t have any ship to complete, forcing them to partner with Transatlantic Steamship Company.
It wasn’t until 1844 that P&O Cruises introduced passenger services and offered tours to Malta, Athens and Gibraltar.
Since this point the company hasn’t looked back and now has 5% of the cruise line market share worldwide, has a total capacity of 14,970 and eight cruise ships sailing around the world.
If you are looking for an adult only cruise, the Oriana, Adonia and Arcadia. Varying in size the Adonia is the smallest of the fleet, offering a more intimate experience. The Oriana offers a classic environment and is decked out with teak decking and has a huge art deco influence. The Arcadia has a hint of extravagance and offers stylish surrounding creating a world of opulence. These are the quieter of the cruises, avoiding the running around of little ones and focusing on entertainment purely for adults.
The ships that are more family friendly are the Azura, Aurora, Britannia Oceana and Ventura. Entertainment wise, the Azura and Oceana are ideal, offering a fantastic range of exciting features. They have great children clubs and entertainment activities to keep the younger ones on the go and having fun during their holiday. The Aurora is elegant and sleek and known for her legendary world tours.
The Britannia, one of the most iconic from the fleet, offers everything you would want from a cruise with the additions of a 5* hotel. Great for shorter tours and fine dining, book a trip on the Ventura.
