Virgin Atlantic will get you from A to B in supreme comfort and style. That’s guaranteed. Their history dates all the way back to the 80’s, when founder; Richard Branson stated that there was a need in the world for a high quality, value for money airline. And how right he was.
At the time, Richard was heavily invested in another of his renowned companies; Virgin Records, who was notorious for signing legendary music acts such as Janet Jackson and of course, the Rolling Stones.
As the 80s moved in to the 90s, Virgin Atlantic had already flown over one million passengers worldwide, to a handful of destinations. And this is when dramatic changes truly started to occur, as they started to spice things up for their passengers during the flight. Did you know Virgin Atlantic was the first airline to offer passengers individual TVs within their business class section? True story.
During this decade, Richard sold Virgin Records, where he heavily invested the proceeds into Virgin Atlantic, which allowed him to consistently improve what already was a fantastic airline. New planes were bought, new services introduced and their route network was expanded. By the end of the 90s, Richard sold a 49% stake in the company to Singapore Airlines, and received a knighthood for his services to entrepreneurship. Deservedly so.
Now in the noughties, some 20 years after the birth of Virgin Atlantic, you can see an incredible change in the company. Further services have been introduced, as well as the launch of the pioneering biofuel, which Virgin Atlantic and GE Aviation worked together to create.
Virgin Atlantic has become renowned for their on-flight services. In 2003, they launched their incredible Upper Class Suite, which offers the longest and most comfortable flat bed and seat, as well as other luxurious services too.
On the ground, significant developments have been made too. In 2006, the revolutionary Virgin Clubhouse at Heathrow Airport was opened. Nothing had ever been seen like it before. It features facilities and amenities such as a hair salon, cocktail bar, games room, Cowshed spa and a brasserie.
Virgin Atlantic are still consistently changing and developing new and exciting ways to offer more to their passengers. That’s why, if you are flying long haul, there’s only one airline to fly with.
