History

Youth Hostel Association were first formed in Germany in 1912, the idea was to give poor city youngsters the chance to breathe some fresh country air. They would all stay together in the hostel and were expected to fend for themselves and keep their living areas clean and tidy.

The Youth Hostel Association as we know it today is a charity organisation that was set up in England in 1930. Which means the company has been thriving for almost 90 years. They are a member of the Hostelling International Federation, which together encompasses over 70 youth hostel associations and 4000 youth hostels.  

The aim of the association today is to “Help all young people of limited means, to gain a greater knowledge, love, and care of rural areas, and appreciation of all cultures in cities and towns, by providing youth hostels or other accommodation for during their travels”
