daredevil-header

Super hero stories are aimed at a younger audience, right? Men in tights fighting crime and battling evil, right?

Wrong!

Daredevil turned the dial up to 11 when he brawled, battered and flipped his way onto binge watcher’s Netflix lists. The amount of broken bones, stab wounds and bloody murders would be enough to make the Avengers’ blush.

Setting a much darker tone than Marvel’s recent film and TV projects, the 13 episode long debut season has paved the way for a string of new adult-themed Marvel TV ventures.

Following the early crime fighting days of double life leading Matt Murdock; a blind defence lawyer by day, crime fighting vigilante by night. Yes, for the record, Daredevil is completely blind. In traditional super hero fashion, Matt has honed his other senses to an unimaginably high level.

He can kick anyone’s ass, literally, with his eyes closed.

Daredevil is known for his fetching red costume, complete with devilishly horned mask, protecting those affected by the nefarious criminals in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen borough. However, this chronological retelling doesn’t bring out the red leathers until the final episode.

Instead, we get Murdock looking like an urban ninja, taking out those who slip through the cracks of the justice system.

Mix in the classic Marvel villain, Wilson Fisk, and things start to get really interesting. Known to Marvel buffs by his alias, the Kingpin, Wilson Fisk is the face behind the network of corruption, crime and drug trafficking in the district.

One fight scene in particular has been creating a lot of chatter between fans of the show. There’s an epic one-shot fight through a hallway, as Daredevil wipes out an apartment full of crooks. Not only is it a brilliant piece of film, it also shows how the powerless hero takes a beating, just like a normal person would.

You’re reminded that Daredevil isn’t all that super; he’s just a man on a mission to clean up crime. He can’t take a knife to the gut or a gunshot to the arm and expect to keep on kicking ass. Fortunately, he’s got the street-wise Rosario Dawson to patch him up after he’s taken a real beating.

Just don’t get carried away and take on your local group of youths on a Friday night...

Fun Fact: Matt Murdock’s friend and admin assistant Karen Page, played by actress Deborah Ann Wolf, has a real life partner who is actually going blind. He suffers from Choroideremia, an inherited disease which progressively deteriorates your eye sight, ultimately leading to a complete loss of vision.
