How You Can Save on Utility Bills

Last Updated : 15 October 2019

It’s that time again! Emily Leary from A Mummy Too has been sharing some more of her top money saving tips and this week she’s been looking at how to save on utility bills.

Utility bills are one of those annoying payments that have to be made and they’re the least fun way of spending money (alongside car repairs) so we figure it makes sense to pay as little as possible. What with the price hikes that seem to happen every month, it may seem impossible to save on utility bills but there are some clever tricks that you need to know about.

Save on Utility Bills

It’s not just energy bills that can be reduced either, think about your other household bills like your TV package. If you don’t watch half the channels that you’re paying for, give your provider a call and tell them you’d like to reduce your package. If they try to talk you out of it, be firm and tell them that you will go elsewhere. You’ll find they will probably come down in price quite dramatically. Once you have their quote, ring around to different providers and see if anyone can beat it.

TV Channels

If it’s energy bills you want to reduce, give your provider a call and get them to look at your account in detail to make sure you’re on the right tariff. Ask about the discounts available and set yourself up online to keep an eye on your usage. Don’t forget you can also check comparison websites, to see who can offer you the best deal.

Finally, there is the old classic energy saving technique in being smart about how you use electricity and gas. Never leave anything on standby, switch off lights when you’re not in the room, always make sure your washing machine is full for a cycle etc. If you boil the kettle a lot throughout the day, why not, instead, fill and boil it in the morning and then put the water in a Thermos flask to use throughout the day. Boiling a kettle is one of, if not the highest, user of watts of any household electrical. No, you don’t have it on constantly but it adds up if you’re a big tea drinker.

Blankets

While I’m sure none of you have your heating on at this time of year, when it does come to switching it back on, try it on a lower setting and put a jumper and some slippers on and wrap yourself up in a blanket. If you’re cold because you’re sitting watching TV, get up and do some exercise or housework, you’ll soon warm up and you’re being more productive!

Another great, simple way to keep your house warm is to close doors, you’ll be surprised at the difference it makes. Even lighting candles can help warm a room up and if you have an open plan kitchen/living room, closing the door when you’re using the oven equals a toasty room.
