Opportunities to visit various countries and mind boggling locations has opened up, giving us worlds that people could have only dreamed of before.

There are many reasons why someone wouldn’t take the plunge and visit a new place. One of them being the cost of travelling, another being that people are unaware that those towns, cities, countries even exist.

Lonely Planet are one of the reasons that the more obscure locations and lesser known attractions are being visited, as they educate their customers and readers as to what is going on in the world.

Lonely Planet put travellers at the centre of everything they do, inspiring them to visit locations that they wouldn’t have necessarily have gone before. They are a trusted brand, who uses writers and explorers who have actually been to these places, so they know what they are talking about.

In their shopping website, you will find a huge selection of Destination Guides, eBooks, Phrase Books, plus much more to help you explore a city or a country. History

The Lonely Planet extravaganza started back in 1973 by Tony and Maureen Wheeler. They began the series with their first ever book called ‘Across Asia on the Cheap’, which was prompted from their very own adventure to the stunning continent.

Lonely Planet’s name came from Tony mishearing a mention of a ‘Lovely Planet’ in the song Space Captain by Joe Cocker. From then, the brand was born.

Another guide to Asia ‘Southeast Asia on a Shoestring’ was created before their most adventurous guide to India was created. These guides are still live today, inspiring their readers every day.

During the mid-90s Lonely Planet went media-wide, appearing on TV and online. This opened up their readership and promoted their fantastic products, whilst showing off the world’s best-loved locations.

Fast forwarding to 2008, the launch of their magazine publication in the UK. This can be found on their website, in print form and there is also a digital edition. It reaches over 1.6 million readers and has a print circulation of 39k.

Lonely Planet has hit so many incredible landmarks, including their 100 millionth guide books and 40th anniversary. Their email newsletter even goes out to over 1 million customers, a figure that was hit back in 2013.

Today Lonely Planet reaches out to an incredible social audience, reaching over 10 million of their devoted fans. Their efforts focus heavily on advice, blog editorial, and stunning images.
