The story of how Asda became one of the UKs most successful supermarket giants begins in Yorkshire with a group of farmers when they founded Hindell’s Dairies in the 1920s. This venture was very successful and in 1949 the company became known as Associated Dairies and Farm Stores Ltd.
Skip forward to 1958 and Peter and Fred Asquith opened a self-service supermarkets, they were much more like the supermarkets we know today and fast became popular thanks to their long hours and permanent reductions.
In 1965 the brothers found that they wished to expand their busy business yet needed some financial backing. Welcome back Associated Dairies and Farm Stores Ltd. The mixing of the two company’s names led to the stores being named Asda. It wasn’t long before the Asquith brothers were brought out and Asda had full control.
The 1970s saw the opening of many new stores and the rapid expansion of the range of products that were stoked. 1977 saw the first ever TV add to feature the Asda pocket tap. A gesture that is now widely acknowledged to symbolise saving money.
1989 saw the exciting partnership of Asda with George Davis, this led to the development of the 4th largest clothing retailer in Britain, George. Asda continued to do very well over the 20 years.
1999 saw the biggest change happen to the company in its history to date, the deal which saw Asda brought by Walmart. The company have never looked back.
New areas were popping up all over the place, Asda Direct went live online, the home shopping department was becoming more popular as customers increasingly found themselves strapped for time and Asda even successfully ventured into the financial side of things and introduced Asda Finance.
Asda main goal has always been to deliver the best quality products at the best prices, this is something they do very well. 2011 saw the company win the Best Value Supermarket for the 14th year running when you couple this information that Asda has achieved over 300 awards for their food is evidence that that this is exactly what they are doing.

Opening hours and contact information
Customers that shop at Asda have the benefit of long opening hours. The majority of the larger stores are open 24 hours. This means the store opens at 8am on a Monday morning and is open until 9pm on Saturday. Sunday opening hours are 10am until 4pm.
Other stores that close at night will tend to be open from 7am until 11pm every day except Sunday when they have the same opening times as the 24 hour stores.
It should be noted however that there may be some slight regional variations as well as changes on bank holidays. It is always advisable to check the exact times using the Asda store finder page on their website.
