Trainline has been making tracks since 1997; promising their customers helpful savings on train tickets and travel arrangements. Beginning as a telephone based service, the company naturally thrived as the internet was made more accessible; selling tickets online since 1999.
The company has seen considerable growth and development over the last eight years, securing their biggest online competitor ‘Qjump’ from the National Express Group in February, 2004. trainline.com Ltd was originally a member of the Virgin Group but in July, 2006, Exponent Private Equity purchased the business for 168 million.

A huge amount of web development and consideration has gone into their website, all focused on the consumer saving money on train tickets. With several helpful website tools, organising travelling by rail has never been so simple.
Thanks to their intuitive and simple to use ‘Best Fare Finder’ tool, travellers who are able to be flexible can filter through the cheapest tickets possible. Even more impressively, the advanced savings can run up to as late as midnight, the day before your departure.
Trainline has spread their success thanks to successful television advertising campaigns and their top rated, free mobile app. This has enabled busy consumers to book their tickets whenever and wherever they are, taking convenience to the next level.
To help their customers always stay one step ahead, the ‘Ticket Alert’ feature notifies the traveller as soon as tickets go on sale for a desired date, ensuring they’ll have the best chance of receiving the cheapest fare prices that really matter to them.
Collecting tickets has also been simplified. In 2008, Trainline began to supply Newbury Data ND4020 rail ticket printers and self-service kiosks to most UK origin stations. Alternatively, customers can print their tickets at home, use M-tickets direct to their mobile phone or have them delivered in the post.
Trainline partnered with Google’s popular Google Maps service in 2012, launching its extensive national rail travel information service for mainland Britain. Google Map’s users can see train routes and timetable information for more than 2,500 stations 170,000 trips nationwide. Doing even more, an additional 8,000 bus stops and over 250 tube stations have all been added.
Changing or cancelling your tickets
There are four key types of ticket to buy from trainline, each coming with their own set of terms and conditions when it comes to changing or cancelling them. If you've managed to save a fortune booking an advanced ticket but can no longer travel, you'll find that these are non-refundable. However, you can change the time of your ticket to better suit you for an additional £10.
Off-peak, Super off-peak and Anytime tickets are all refundable. You can apply for a refund up to 28 days from the expiry date of the ticket. It's always good to know where you stand when it comes to cancelling tickets.
